Incheon National University Chinese Research Institute holds international academic conference

The National Institute of Chinese Studies of Incheon National University of China and Chinese Culture (Director Jang Jung-ah) will hold an international academic conference under the theme of "Incheon Chinese and Incheon British Consulate" in cooperation with Nagasaki University's Regional Science Research Institute at Songdo Campus Professor Center (No. 2) on October 11.


In commemoration of the 140th anniversary of the birth of Incheon Chinatown, this international academic conference focuses on the relationship and exchange between Incheon and Nagasaki, and highlights the relationship between the Western community in Incheon, the British Consulate, and the overseas Chinese.


In line with the theme of the international academic conference, the Chinese Academy will hold the "Incheon British Consulate and Hana Glover Bennett Exhibition" organized by the Nagasaki University Regional Science Research Institute from October 11 to November 6 at the Haksan Library Convergence Hall on campus.    


Yukari Yamada, a professor at Nagasaki University of Science, will introduce photos related to the city of modern Incheon and the British Consulate in Incheon among the albums of the Glover family, the director of the Nagasaki History Museum, in a keynote speech on the 11th.


Brian Bark-Gaffney, emeritus professor at Nagasaki University of Science, highlights the trajectory of life of the Nagasaki-based Homlinger Association's Incheon branch manager, Walter Bennett, who lived here for a long time after the closure of the Japanese Consulate in 1915, and Hana Glover Bennett, who married Bennett and lived in Incheon for more than 40 years.  


Professor Song Seung-seok of the Chinese Academy of Sciences presents Westerners buried in the Incheon Family Park, focusing on how they influenced Incheon and the adventures, successes, romance and tragedies they experienced while living in Incheon.


Lee Jung-hee, a professor at Incheon National University's Chinese Academy, traces how Deputy Consul Jolie of the British Foreign Office in Incheon actively carried out the protection activities of overseas Chinese living in Incheon immediately after the Sino-Japanese War and why Incheon Overseas Chinese produced his tombstone at Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery in Seoul.  


Kim Eun-mi, a professor at the National Taiwan Normal University, examines how the privileges of acquiring and owning real estate are established and the formation of collective residences in Seoul during the opening period. Kim Bong-joon, a professor of HK research at the National Institute of Chinese and Chinese Culture at Incheon National University, compares and analyzes the contents of the first modern treaty between the Qing Dynasty and Japan, the Qing Dynasty, and the Chinese People's Landing Trade Agreement, focusing on the legal status of the overseas Chinese living in Japan and Joseon.
